You might get different suggestions on this. I set up usually about a gig
for swap. I guess I could have put /home on a separate partition, but I
never have. I'd say you wouldn't need much more than 10 GB for the OS. You
can get by with less, too, if you're not planning to install a lot of
additional software. Myself, I do a bit of video and web development work,
so allowed 40GB for my OS. The rest of my storage is on other mounted
devices/partitions.
I've been testing Kubuntu (7.10) as well and I just don't like it as much as
the Gnome desktop. After two weeks with Kubuntu, I ended up booting back
into Gnome. I kept having problems with Dolphin. It crashed on me three or
four times a day, sometimes more. I also could never get Adept Manager to
work. Don't mind working with apt-get from the command line, but... who
knows. Hopefully there will be some improvements in 8.04.
I hear you on VirtualBox. I was going to use it for a number of tasks, but
the mouse was extremely buggy for me. So, I'll just dual-boot if I need
to. The only thing I was needing to even boot into Windows for was to use a
Sonicwall VPN Client. I wasn't having much luck with OpenSwan. But, work
is buying me a Sonicwall Box, so... for me, I can do just everything else
under Wine. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion has good support under Wine and I'm
thinking of giving that a try in the next week or so, when things slow down
at work.
