I mailed this earlier but used the wrong return address So will re-send
using the correct one. Sorry about the duplication if you receive both.

Happy New Year to everyone.
I know there is no large need for anti-virus software when using Linux.
However, to protect the people using Windows, when I forward email to
them, I would like to be able to check my email when it comes in and/or
when sending it. I am using Ubuntu 8.10 and prefer Thunderbird to read
my email, but I can change to another. I have tried ClamAV but there is
problems with it. Using KlamAV to maintain ClamAV it gets errors when
trying to update the virus definitions. After Googling it I find this
is a common situation with Ubuntu 8.10. I used Clamderib (maybe spelled
wrong) to use ClamAV with Thunderbird but get errors when it tries to
scan the email. I have tried Kmail and that seems to work but there are
some features in Kmail I don't care for. I'll cover that in another
email. So far I have broken Linux beyond my ability to repair it and so
reinstalled it 3 times and still haven't found a way to scan my email.
I have also tried some of the commercial Anti-Virus software like Avast
and found they don't check email.

My question is; Is there a better anti-virus program to use than
ClamAV? If not can anyone give me any tips in installing it, other
programs to install, or whatever that will assist me in getting this
running. Right now I am in the process of installing Ubuntu again and
so figured it would be a good time to ask for help.

Have a Great Day
