The only time you would really need AV is if you were mailing exe's or
forwarding things from someone else. I, personally, won't forward
something not from someone I already trust, and any exe I download to
send to someone I run through http://www.virustotal.com/
But yes, I too have had many problems getting ClamAV to work right
under ubuntu8.10. Even Ubuntu 8.04 Server has a lot of issues. The
only way I have managed to get it running on Server is to download the
sources and build them myself.
