Was helping my friend update his computer he had 512 MB ram and a 160GB hard
drive. let me just say here that he was not having any Wow factor.
So i had him order some more memory (4GB) and hard drive (500GB) and part of
the deal was to get Ubuntu 8.10 installed on the 160 GB hard drive.
lets just say that after i installed the memory vand drive vista would no
longer boot off the main drive .... maybe to much hardware has changed or
its
a new feature .... (the computer was a 3 Ghz pentuim D)
anyway i went about doing a full install of vista from his disks and after
it was done after like 8 hours for updates and reboots and
some apps installed he was ready to go. after the system came up i had this
feeling that the OS felt like something i removed from most windows
computers coming from dell gateway hp etc etc ( adware crapware buy this
crap ... ) except it was integrated into vista everything i clicked on
i was presented with upgrade windows and click here to buy windows software
..... um so this is windows adware addition um vista on many if not
all the screens showing computer infomation had these nice lil features ,
yes this is home basic but ads inside my OS .... besides installing vista
security products where also installed taking up extra time.
After all that time had past i did say 8 hours but also an entire night for
windows to install sp1 cough cough i ventured to install linux ....
finally i could relax install and update so i did a standerd install of
ubuntu 8.10 and all update and additional software installed (codecs etc)
and i looked at the time an noticed like an hour and 30 mintues went by
...... after i brought my friends pc back to his house under linux i pluged
in his epson all in one printer and noticed a pop-up in the right hand
corner saying it was detected and automaticly configured for use ..... ( in
windows vista it did require a driver / software download) so under linux a
min after turning on his printer/scanner he was able to print and scan
windows took alot longer about 10 mins and a reboot. ( this just shows if
linux get more oem support and device drivers the kind of things we may see)
during this exercise i also had to copy large amount of files of and hope he
didnt get hit with the infamous vista copy bug, copying files in vista is
dog slow.
i had to let this run all night with the vista download (which probley
downgraded his connectio to the network ) updates which the next day i re
copied because windows
didnt copy all the files yet gave me an error ... maybe sp1 fixed that ....
so after all the updates i copied again. ( talk about a wow expience the
only cool thing was if
i was charging , god all the extra hours.)
i think i finaly understood lately as what Wow means on windows. i have
fixed many virus infested computers and with that new worm hitting 9
million+ boxes (windows boxes
only apply but WHY THE F**K DOES all the reporting agency never say it only
effects WINDOWS or WINDOWS VIRUS , nice worm too it infects from that was
patched
in october but also now attemps brute force dictonary based attack on admin
accounts ( which normaly dont have passwords on most home pcs .. ) anyway it
sickends me that
these virus outbreaks are not labled WINDOWS Only Virus right in the head
line in the article. The above worm is also cited to might be connected to
becoming a botnet
which might actually wake some people up i mean 9 million computers could do
some interesting damage.
