PROBLEM: I have noticed that some of my customers email I send are getting bounced back/rejected. On doing some research I have found that I have been blacklisted on some of the lists that email servers are using. cbl.abuseat.org for one. So I went to their website and did a DNS lookup and I was on there. It said that on the time of detection my mail server was infected with or NATting for a computer infected with a high volume spam sending Trojan that is participating or facilitating a botnet sending or spreading virus/spam Trojans. Another thing I noticed is that when the Mail Server/webserver is rebooted the Kernel Daemon log errored on boot (didn't boot up). I thought that to be a dead giveaway that the Mail server has been breached and is possibly being used by something other then my email. What is my next step???? I don't know a whole lot about this. My Mail server was originally setup by a friend of mine and I am not sure how to contact him any longer. Dan? I need to clear up this problem and get the Mail server un blacklisted. Most Lists have a web based module that lets you un blacklist yourself but they warn you that if you do not clear up the problem and simply unlist yourself you can be blacklisted forever. Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. You did not mention what distribution and version your mail server runs. This would help... a little. Its possible it can be updated and patched to current, more secure, versions of the kernel, apache, sendmail, et al. As for the log file, it is common practice for a cracker to erase his/her tracks and possibly disable any further logging that would expose the crackers activities. It is entirely possible that there is nothing wrong with syslog. Your logging problem may be a corrupt fs on that partition. Have you ran fsck on it? I do not want to sound like the bringer of doom and gloom, but I am of the school that once a server is breached, you better be damn good at tracking it down and be 100% sure your cured or.. reinstall. Newer distros have some really good security features and allow for quick updates when security problems arise... not so much with older distros. Again, it depends on what your currently running. I'm sure most everyone on the list would be willing to jump in and help with a reinstall if it came down to it. You came to the right place ;) In the immediate future... o disconnect that box from the net, or route it thru a nat'ing firewall that allows you to watch the stream. o if you have physical access to it, disable ssh while your testing it. o Possibly have someone host your MX for short time. o Run fsck on the entire system o "last" will let you know who (and where) users/root last logged in. (if this errors out from a corrupt wtmp file, or wtmp isn't very old, best bet is to start backing stuff up.) Binaries are VERY easy to trojan/rootkit and with so many places to hide, it is almost impossible to be 100% sure you are clean. Traditionally hackers that take over Linux boxes and get deep enough to install spam bots will also install rootkits or various other ways to hide/dig in deeper. chkrootkit (www.chkrootkit.org) is an easy tool to see if you have been compromised. As for setting up a new mail server, there are several great how-to's for setting up virtual mail servers using Postifx, courrier, postfixadmin, and mysql. Additionally, many have support for spamassasin, clamav, and other filtering methods. While I can't seem to find the Debian how-to I generally use, I found an Ubuntu one that looks about the same: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostfixCompleteVirtualMailSystemHowto It seems a little crazy at a glance, but take it slow and it is fairly straight forward to setup, and a breeze to manage once it is up and running. Since at least two of them use different rendering engines, it can't simply be a browser issue. I reseated the RAM, the wireless card, and some other accessable bits, as suggested just-in-case. Still randomly freezing. So, I went back to the previous kernel 2.6.28.11(?) in my GRUB list, and this seems to have sorted everything out. I just ran the thing for three hours straight, downloading some stuff from legaltorrents and doing a fake mail-merge document with over 3000 addressees. So far, so good, the problem seems to be solved!
