If it is an Atheros-based card, then I would suggest installing the
linux-backports-modules-jaunty package which includes an updated version of
the ath5k and ath9k drivers. Many users report improvement with this
version, which could not be used by default in Ubuntu 9.04 because it
requires intrusive changes to the wireless stack common to other wireless
drivers.
